5 Simple Ways to Stay Safe this Summer
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it's also important to stay safe. Here are some simple tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable summer:
- Stay hydrated. It's important to stay hydrated, especially when it's hot outside. Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks.
- Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Apply sunscreen liberally and reapply every two hours, or more often if you're sweating or swimming.
- Be careful around water. Whether you're swimming, boating, or fishing, it's important to be careful around water. Always swim with a buddy, and never drink alcohol before or while you're swimming.
- Be aware of the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, a serious condition that can be fatal. Both can be characterized by dizziness, weakness, headaches, and a rise in body temperature. One main difference is that during Heat Exhaustion, your body will sweat profusely; during heat stroke, you may not be able to sweat. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and call 911 immediately.
- Take precautions against insect bites. Insects like mosquitoes and ticks can carry diseases, so it's important to take precautions against insect bites. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, and use insect repellent.
During day of extreme heat, when an advisory has been released, the Seton Center will operate as a Cooling Station during opening hours (10am-4pm, Monday-Saturday). Bring a water bottle - filling stations are available!
